Thomas Nast ( 1846-1902) was one of Harper’s Weekly most important illustrators. His political cartoons were extremely influential in the American political arena. He was thought of by some as the ” Father of American Caricature.” He created the Santa Claus and Uncle Sam images we are so familiar with . He also devised the Tammany Tiger and popularized the donkey for the Democratic party and the elephant for the Republicans. He was known as a political cartoonist with impeccable integrity.
