A very beautifully executed work engraved by Nicolause Dorigny.
Dorigny in his day had the reputation as the first engraver in Europe when his engraved works after Raphael earned him his reputation. He was then invited to the English court by Queen Anne to undertake engraving Raphael’s Famous Cartoons at Hampton Court . This could be said to be the rise of the reputation of the engraving. The lettering in this set of prints was in Latin only as they were directed towards the educated elite of the period. This piece might be one those engravings.
After he completed two sets of these prints King George I presented Dorigny with a knighthood making him the first of only two artists in the history of British art to be knighted for having made particular prints. This is truly a magnificent work of art and a very good impression in good condition.
