Daniel G. Elliot (1835-1915 ) was a wealthy New Yorker and artist whose passion in life was ornothology. He became very involved with the American Museum of Natural History and devoted much of his time helping to build their ornothological department with many unique specimens. He was also a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London. This print is from his ” Monograph of the Tetraoninde ” ( The Family of Grouse). It was published by the author and lithographed and colored by Bowen & Co. ,Philadelphia. It is an exquisite and dramatic image richly handcolored depicting the male grouse with the female in the background. It is in good condition with a small chip in the right margin and not near the image. This grouse is found in the Rocky Mountains.
