Edward Wells , a mathematician and geography professor at Oxford prepared this map as part of an atlas ” A New Sett of Maps” which he dedicated to the Duke of Glouster. This seemingly simple map is one of the earliest folio size English language maps of New England and the Northeast . The engraver Sutton Nicholls specialized in topographical designs and architectural elevations. He engraved maps, bird ‘s-eye views and more. This map shows the British Colonies in North America with insets of Bermuda, Barbados, the Carolina’s, Jamaica and Nova Scotia. This map was printed in Oxford at the Sheldonian Theater and is considered a rare find regarded for its accuracy and its aesthetic appeal. It is framed.
